Are you planning to go for a shopping this festive season, then make sure you aren't lured by the retailers to buy unwanted things. For this you just need to know the tricks which the retailers use as a bait to clean up your wallets.
Here are some of the retailer tricks you should be aware of, to avoid from spending money unnecessarily.
- Decoy Pricing:This tactic is used by many stores. If a product worth Rs 1,000 is placed next to that which is worth of Rs 800 and Rs 1,200, you are likely to pick the Rs 1,000 product and think of it as a good deal. It's a diversion to make the costly items look economical.
- Gruen Transfer: The Gruen Transfer(also known as Gruen Effect) is the building designs that confuse shoppers and make them spend more time so that they make impulse buys. Crossing the same spot again also makes you less price-sensitive due to the false feeling of price familiarity.
- Discount Traps:Most of us are very much interested in buying things which come at discount rates. But the other side of this scenario is different. Its like this- 'Buy one, get second at 50%' or 'Buy one, get one free' don't make for good offers. Because the first one is only providing 25% discount on each item and in the latter, the price may cover both items as it doesn't take same amount of investment to make or get similar products.
- Eye Level Products :Usually all the retailers go for this. They place all the costly items at your eye level rather than at top or bottom of the rack.So that you may directly grab your attention on them before going for economical ones.
- Carry Bags or Carts:You know why you are given a cart as soon as you enter the cloth store or a supermarket. Its for a reason. If you are holding things in your hands then you are likely to buy less items. And the other is that it makes up your mind to buy more.
- Children Stuff:The stuff related children like toys, games etc., will be placed at lower levels as per the kids' ages and heights. So that they gets attracted to them.Once they got a good view on then they won't leave the shop without holding those products.
- Mesh Bags:For example in a retail store if you take vegetables and fruits, you find two kinds of them-one are open free and the other is wrapped in covers. The vegetables which are in mesh bags are costlier compared to the loose items. So always prefer to buy loose items so that you can also avoid of buying damaged ones.
- Check Out Counter:Have you ever noticed why small items like chocolates, gums and candies are place at the check out counter. There is again trap to make you spend some more money. After an exhaustive shopping session, you are now an easy prey with little self-control. So you will easily succumb to chocolates and small items. This is also why you buy a Rs 10 candy at the cash counter even though you're not much interested in it.
If you know all these tricks you can somewhat get away with unwanted stuff in your bag.So don't fall prey to all these tricks by retailers. Its a better way to have a note of things with you when you are going especially to supermarkets. And have good and economical shopping this festive season.
